Hifumi Abe - definite force in the near future

This clip is from the 2016 All Japan Weight Class Champioinships, recently held in Fukuoka,Kyushu.

Ex-world champion Masashi Ebinuma (66kg), as most spectators had expected, faced Hifumi Abe(pronunced "ah-bay"), an 18-year-old phenom who just joined the Nittaidai Judo Team in April.

Although Ebinuma had lost to Abe a little over a year before at the 2014 Tokyo Grand Slam, I thought that Ebinuma would be able to handle Abe with much more ease this time, especially because it is the Olympic year now and a seasoned competitor like Ebinuma should be expected not to repeat the same mistake.

I was wrong. Not only did Abe beat the former world champ, but he did so in such a dominant fashion.

The only thing that I thought he could improve was his pin(osaekomi), which he couldn't secure not even for the smallest score.

As an 18-year-old, Abe may not be as dominating as Toshihiko Koga once was when he was of the same age, but his latest performance at the tournament where the best Japanese judoka compete proved he has got what it takes to stay in the very top league for years to come.
